European elections 2019

The European Parliament elections of May 23-26 promise to shake up politics in the EU. The centre-right and centre-left blocks, which have together enjoyed a majority and dominated the top EU jobs, are expected to lose seats to a range of parties that are critical of European integration and globalisation. A more fragmented Parliament could complicate EU decision-making, including the selection of the EU’s top officials. But increased competition from populist entrants could also force pro-EU groups to step up their fight to protect and renew the European project.
