The forthcoming policy brief analyses the progress made in the 'reset' in EU-UK relations since the Labour government came to power in the UK in July 2024. It looks at what has gone well and what has not, and tries to understand why. In particular, it reviews the areas of co-operation included in the EU-UK 'Common Understanding' and the Security and Defence Partnership that were agreed at the May 2024 EU-UK summit and assesses where things have moved forward and where they have stalled. Recognising that in the current geopolitical environment, with the EU and the UK facing common challenges from Russia, China and the US, both the EU and UK would be strengthened by working together more closely, it looks forward to the next EU-UK summit, and argues for a bolder and more flexible approach from both sides.
