Transatlantic relations

For 80 years, Europe and the US have generally worked together to defend and promote democracy and to encourage trade and economic liberalisation. Under Donald Trump, particularly in his second term, all Europe’s assumptions about the transatlantic alignment of interests and values have been challenged. European members of NATO worry that they may find themselves on their own in the face of Russian aggression. The Trump administration has given up promoting democracy globally, and actively supports European populist parties that challenge democratic norms. At the same time, Trump's tariffs and  reliance on power instead rules threaten both the stability  and the access to the US market that Europe has depended upon for growth.
